A história acompanha as aventuras do guerreiro nórdico Ragnar Lodbrok (Travis Fimmel, de The Beast), figura histórica que viveu no período Medieval. Considerando-se descendente de Odin, Ragnar busca dominar vários territórios da Europa. Com isso, ele enfrenta a oposição de Earl Haraldson (Gabriel Byrne), ex-guerreiro e agora líder de seu povo, casado com Siggy (Jessalyn Gilsig, de Glee), uma jovem que tem sua lealdade dividida.
No elenco também estão, Gustaf Skarsgard (irmão de Alexander Skarsgard, de True Blood), George Blagden, Clive Standen (Camelot) e Katheryn Winnick (Bones).
